Sony Interactive Entertainment
Sony Interactive Entertainment, formerly known as Sony Computer Entertainment prior to rebranding, is a Japanese-American video game and digital entertainment company and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation, founded in 1993 in Tokyo, Japan by Ken Kutaragi, and rebranded in San Mateo, US in 2016. They are the creators of the PlayStation brand of video game consoles.
As of 2020, Sony is the second largest video game company in the world, after Tencent.
Why They Rock
- They created the PlayStation brand, some of the best consoles and handhelds ever made.
- They pay attention to what their fans want, and they deliver; they even started bringing back old IP's like Wipeout and helped Activision with reviving Crash Bandicoot. They also announced at PSX 2017 that they're going to bring back MediEvil, another classic IP with a small, but loyal, fanbase.
- They also have respect for their gamers; they are against the "Games as a Service" model and have shown a commitment to single-player games. Despite the opportunities being present, they didn't incorporate any microtransactions or loot boxes in Horizon Zero Dawn and God Of War (2018). The company is far less likely to give in to microtransactions as other companies like Electronic Arts.
- They, along with Nintendo, are one of the few publishers that prove the narrative of "single-player games don't sell well" to be completely false thanks to their commitments to producing high-quality single-player games.
- Published some awesome games like Uncharted, Sly Cooper, Gravity Rush, Gran Turismo, Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, and a slew of many other great franchises.
- Because they own many IP's like the ones above, there is always at least a handful of reasons to buy their consoles. Not only that, but their IP's also cover many genres, so there's something for everybody.
- They don't rely on two or three franchises as much as their competitors do, and they don't milk them dry.
- Sony has shown that they don't abandon their new IPs when the games flop critically or commercially; games like Knack or Gravity Rush wouldn't have received sequels if they did.
- They support their developers by allowing them to do whatever games they want, which is a really huge risk, but as a result, many developers love working and making games for them.
- Hazelight Studios (developers of A Way Out) even admitted that they were jealous of how Sony treats developers like Naughty Dog and gives them freedom at doing what they want.
- Instead of making Guerrilla Games do a sequel to Killzone: Shadow Fall or another first-person shooter, Sony allowed them to make an entirely new game altogether in an unfamiliar genre. That game was, of course, the science-fiction action RPG, Horizon Zero Dawn.
- Even after a string of disappointing games, they gave SIE Santa Monica Studios the support they needed to bring God of War (2018) to life instead of simply giving up on them and shutting the studio down, unlike other certain publishers. The results really paid off.
- Before Insomniac Games started developing the upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man game, Sony asked them to develop a Marvel game (with Marvel's OK of course), however, they told them that they should choose what Marvel character their game should be based on (and they chose Spider-Man). It really shows how much freedom they give even their second-party developers.
- Naughty Dog once admitted that if it weren't for Sony, they would have never been able to do big games like the Uncharted series.
- Even when Sucker Punch Productions spend a considerable amount of time developing their games, Sony still allows them to do so without the need to rush them to release before a deadline. As a result, many of their games are always well received.
- Even for non-owned companies, they allowed Quantic Dream, who focus more on story telling than actual gameplay, to do whatever they wanted with their games and still gave them the support they needed resulting in great games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human.
- When they made the first PlayStation, it was made for both older and younger players, offering games for both audiences (gaming back then was famous as being mainly for children)
- Their games usually have awesome cinematic stories along with great gameplay.
- The first PlayStation console was a big part of the transition to 3D gaming along with the Nintendo 64.
- Creator of the Dual Shock controllers, one of the most comfortable controllers ever made.
- They support lots of indie developers.
- Aside from the original PS3 model, their consoles are cheap and easy to use as well as develop games for.
- They tend to make lots of good sales on PSN that can be compared to Steam's sales.
- Their PS4 is the first console to support Virtual Reality well with the PlayStation VR.
- Their consoles would do more than gaming; for example, the PS1 could play CD songs, the PS2 could play DVD and songs too, their PS3 and PS4 play DVD, Blu-ray and digital movies.
- Their first-party games are usually very cheap on the PS Store.
- Made lots of great motion accessories and games, like the Eye-Toy for the PS2, PlayStation Move controller and the PlayStation Eye for the PS3, the PSP Camera for the PSP, the PS4's PlayStation Camera and VR, and the PSVita itself.
- They reconsidered their decision to shut down the PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita (though their plans to shut it down for PSP will still proceed).
- In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, they launched the Play at Home initiative, giving away free games to PlayStation gamers with no strings attached.
- Due to some PS3 consoles and PS4 consoles not having backward compatibility, they introduced remastering games, where they re-release old games with new features and technical improvements.
- All of their consoles and handhelds are very powerful for their time with the exception of the PS2 (though it was still very powerful).
- They usually support their consoles and handhelds long into the next generation before discontinuing them, with the PlayStation 2 being up and strong for 13 years before it was discontinued.
- Their handhelds can play some old consoles games like the PlayStation very well. Their handheld games also have graphically fidelities that are close to home consoles.
- Introduced Cross-Buy, where if you buy a game for PS3, you'll get a free copy of the Vita (PlayStation versions only).
- Their handhelds were the strongest competition to Nintendo handhelds (though they still didn't succeed).
- Usually, years after their consoles and handhelds were made they usually re-release the console/handheld again in a different model that's cheaper and with improved stuff.
- The games they make usually have characters that'd become an unofficial mascot for their consoles, like Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation.
- Many games that were exclusive to PC or other consoles would get ported to PlayStation consoles.
- Most of the time when they make mistakes (like the original PS3 model or Knack's rushed development) they learn from it.
- Sometimes they'd pay developers to add exclusive content for the PlayStation versions of a multiplatform game (whether this is good or bad is up to your own interpretation).
- When people reacted negatively to Microsoft's Xbox One at E3 2013 they took advantage of that by announcing that the PS4 won't have any of the restrictions that Microsoft was going to impose for the Xbox One.
- Aside from the PS3, PSP & PS Vita, their consoles are usually the best selling for their generation; in fact, the PS1, PS2 and PS4 are one of the best selling consoles ever made.
- Their PS Plus service, a subscription where you get lots of awesome monthly games (sometimes even full AAA titles), more discounts on stuff (up to 75%), and exclusive beta access for certain games.
- After a lot of prodding and bad PR, they have finally decided to allow cross-play. They started by reversing their stranglehold on Epic Games accounts for Fortnite, as have an open beta for Fortnite with cross-platform gameplay, commerce, and progression.
- They usually have strong marketing campaigns for their products. The most over-the-top they have gone is having a New York underground train custom-fitted and painted with a Spider-Man theme.
- They have a habit of announcing games way too early, the best example would be The Last Guardian, which was announced at E3 2006, but wasn't released until November 2016.
- Their PS3 had a dreadful launch, due to complicated hardware and a lack of quality games. The PS3 commercials used to advertise the console (which were incredibly disturbing) certainly did NOT help.
- They do tend to ignore some of their IP's when a new console is made, like Jak and Daxter, Parappa the Rapper, Twisted Metal, & SOCOM: US Navy Seals.
- Nowadays, they tend to focus way too much on their American Studios and Guerrila Games rather than giving support to their British and Japanese studios like Media Molecule, London Studio and Polyphony Digital.
- Speaking of which, they shut down Japan Studio in 2021.
- Aside from Media Molecule games and Naughty Dog Games (due to their success), recently Sony tends to shut down online games that aren't successful enough, rather than try to give players a good reason to play their online games, some examples include Kill Strain, Destiny of Spirits, and MAG (all of which are now completely unplayable). Sony did admit that they're not great with online games and that they wished they were as good at it as they are in Single Player games.
- They had a bad habit of not supporting their handhelds much, especially the PlayStation Vita.
- Speaking of which, after the failure of the PlayStation Vita, Sony has dropped out of the handheld gaming market.
- They sometimes cash in on some of Nintendo's successful ideas, such as Super Smash Bros., the Wii remote and the NES classic, the later of which they cashed in on poorly.
- In addition to the PS1 classic, they have also made some poor versions of their good consoles, such as the PSX, the PSP Go, and PlayStation TV.
- They have their share of mediocre and/or bad games too, like The Order: 1886, Hanuman: Boy Warrior, Bravo Team, Predator: Hunting Grounds, and Lair.
- While it doesn't happen often, the PSN is notoriously easy to hack, with the best example being the 2011 hack.
- Not only does the PS4's PSN have shovelware recently, they've also been promoting them.
- They shoved microtransactions into Killzone: Shadow Fall and Gran Turismo 6. They later did this with Gran Turismo Sport even though they said they wouldn't.
- They've recently now done this with Destruction AllStars. Not only that but you are forced to pay for the Single-Player content!
- Horrible customer service and questionable terms of service. Unlike Microsoft which at least tries to help a person recover their account if it is hacked, Sony declares that the original user is responsible for it being hacked (even if they're not) and will automatically perma ban it with no chance to appeal.
- They used to play favorites whenever it comes to crossplay, fortunately, they stopped that now.
- They've recently been copying Microsoft's bad habits, like paid online multiplayer.
- Much like Nintendo in the 90's, after their rebranding in San Mateo, they have taken to censor some games on their consoles or in some cases, flat out removing them from the PlayStation Store.
