The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a platform video game based on the film of the same name. It was developed by Heavy Iron Studios (the creators of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom) and published by THQ for GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance. It was released on October 27, 2004, in North America and February 18, 2005, in Europe.

Why It Rocks

  1. It's a technical successor to Battle for Bikini Bottom, which was also good. This game was built on top of BFBB so it shares the same solid platforming and smooth controls from that game.
  2. Upgrade system which gives you an incentive to collect more Manliness Points since they're the currency for them, and the upgrades make significant improvements to the characters.
  3. Follows the plot of the movie extremely well.
  4. There are some levels in which you slide down a course in an old bathtub, a clam, and King Neptune's crown.
  5. There are bonus challenges in every level, which increases replay value.
  6. Visually pretty.
  7. Solid voice-acting, with the actors from the show and movie reprising their roles.
  8. The console versions last 15 hours, (6 hours in one go) and there are lots of unlockables and extras to collect.
  9. Amazing game soundtrack.
  10. The PC version is a different experience than the console and GBA versions as it is developed by the same company who did Operation: Krabby Patty, Employee of the Month, and the PC port of Battle for Bikini Bottom. This version loosely follows the plot of the movie and you can even play as Plankton and Mindy.
  11. Goofy Goober Rock from the movie appears in the second phase of the final boss.
  12. The starfish in the tank cheer you on in "Google Eyes and Smelly Knick-Knacks".
  13. Unlike Battle for Bikini Bottom, where Mr. Krabs is voiced by Joe White, the character is actually voiced by Clancy Brown, his voice actor from the show and the movie, in this game.

Bad Qualities

  1. The game's PS3 rerelease was extremely flawed.
  2. The PC version is a point and click game that gets boring very quickly.
    • In the PC version on newer computers, the in-game character models will have some glitches (missing eye textures, SpongeBob's teeth is missing, and Sandy's diving suit is notably messed up due to the missing textures and she won't have a torso)
  3. It is extremely linear compared to its predecessor. (But that's only if you played it and then jump into this)
  4. This game can get a little too scary for its target audience as it has some freaky imagery and jumpscares. Especially from the levels Rock Slide, and Google-eyes and Smelly Knickknacks.
  5. Goofy Goober tokens are mandatory in order to progress though the Game. As you need a certain amount to get Spongebob and Patrick's new abilities in order to progress though the Game.
  6. The GameCube port suffers from a low framerate, bad textures, and bad shading. Some attention to detail had to removed as well, and there's no lighting. Fortunately if you use an emulator, such as Dolphin, you can download this HD texture pack for some HD resolutions.
  7. The FMV cutscenes in the console versions are just still frames from the movie instead of clips taken straight from the movie unlike many other movie-based games. The still frames look pretty bad, and the David Hasslehoff character had to be redrawn due to copyright issues.
  8. In the PC version on newer computers, the in-game character models will have some glitches (missing eye textures, SpongeBob's teeth is missing, and Sandy's diving suit is notably messed up due to the missing textures and she won't have a torso) but you can speed it up with dgvoodoo, which allows you to force the resolution to 1080p and uncap the framerate so you can play in 60fps or higher, it also fixes the graphical glitches.
  9. The game was made in 6 months, making it extremely glitchier than Battle for Bikini Bottom.
  10. Ring Challenges are annoying, and the rings can sometime not register, dubbing the name fake ring.
  11. The scenes that were taken from the movie are just slideshows, instead of full-motion cutscenes. (This could be Heavy Iron Studios, not having the full access to the movie for the cutscenes.)

Reception

The game received positive reviews from both critics and fans of the show and movie.
