The Wonderful 101 is an action-adventure video game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo for the Wii U in 2013. It is directed by Hideki Kamiya and produced by Atsushi Inaba. The remaster titled The Wonderful 101: Remastered, has been released initially on May 19, 2020 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, which was self-published by PlatinumGames.
Gameplay
You play as a large group of people similar to Pikmin and you attack by forming each weapon with the people you gathered called the "Unite Morph" by using the analog stick or touchpad. Which Unite Morph in different shape forms a weapon. The bigger the Unite Morph the more damage it causes. The more amount of people also increases the meter of forming the Unite Morph.
Plot
An Alien alliance known as Geathjerk are on a heavy advantage on Earth that is protected by it's defenses by Super Reactors. The defenders are on duty to protect their home and their own future. They are known as The Wonderful 100, and together they must stop the Geathjerk from destroying Earth at all cost.
Why It Rocks
- The gameplay is very fun, unique and intense.
- Extremely fluid, tight and responsive controls.
- Brilliant combat. Even though the gameplay is reminiscent to Pikmin, it actually does it's own unique take on combat as using by adding more citizen to form a unite morph.
- The concept feels very reminiscent to Super Sentai/Power Rangers in a very good way.
- A lot of missions and content in this game which can give a lot of challenges.
- The soundtrack is amazing which fits well with the sequences.
- Awesome and intimidating boss fights
- Quick time events are definitely worth the gameplay making it worthwhile.
- There are some funny moments which makes it feel very consistent and fitting for the game's tone and premise.
- On top of that, the premise feels very exciting which makes it worth it.
- The characters are entertaining, and the characters are very amusing when they comprehend each other.
- Despite the ridiculously nonsensical story it remained to be very engaging for the spectacle it provides for it's fanbase and audiences with it's well thought up simple storyline.
- The Cel shaded graphics look pretty good and the visuals looked great as they greatly resembled to Viewtiful Joe.
- The final boss battle is absolutely fantastic. It is considered to be one of the most timeless final battles ever made for a Nintendo Exclusive alongside with Kid Icarus: Uprising.
- The ending, despite doing the "Here we go again" trope, is amazing as it ended with a High Note as The Wonderful 100 now know as The Wonderful 101 is back and stronger than ever with a tremendous presentation of it's ending theme.
Bad Qualities
- The story is a bit all over the place.
- The humor can go very out of place sometimes since there are some sexual jokes.
- Luka (the child main character and also known as Wonder Goggles in the epilogue) is extremely unlikable and a terrible character. He hated every single thing around him and helped Geathjerk infiltrate Earth, his own planet, because of how his mother died. It's sad but you don't have to go through insane measures of revenge by destroying your own home.
- On that topic he should've just said to the heroes of what really exactly happened and why is he behaving so strange.
- It can be pretty difficult by completing all the achievements and awards of the game. Especially for beginners. There is no heads up that there's a shop to get new skills.
- The Prince Vorkken boss fights are pretty unfair as they have Unite Morph abilities as well as moving quickly and blocking the attacks without getting a clear hit.
Reception
The Wonderful 101 was positively received, however it sold poorly compared to other PlatinumGames titles due to the Wii U being sold poorly at that time.
By the time since the Nintendo Switch release. The game's director Hideki Kamiya and PlatinumGames wants to remaster it for the Switch as multiple Wii U titles has been ported to it. Until on February 3, 2020 when it's been announced on Kickstarter along with PS4 and PC on it’s funding campaign.
