Battletoads is a 2020 video game developed by Dlala Studios, produced by Rare, and published by Xbox Game Studios for the Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. This is a complete reboot of the series that was released 26 years after Battletoads Arcade.

Gameplay

The game generally is a beat 'em up, in which you defeat enemies in a given arena.

The product has an obstacle course reminiscent of the original game's notoriously difficult Turbo Tunnel, but instead of the original's side view, the one in the reboot has the camera behind the bikes.

Battletoads is also sprinkled with many mini-games, platforming and shoot 'em up levels.

Why It Rocks

  1. This game is good old Battletoads with the almost same enjoyable gameplay. Like the original, it is a mix of many genres, although it mostly plays Beat 'em up here.
  2. Great hand-drawn graphics that look like a modern Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon animated series. The game is dripped with many details and moving objects.
  3. Incredible soundtrack that captures the spirit of the original. The music draws from the rock genre, which even suits the Battletoads atmosphere. The best example is the legendary main menu music, which is basically a remake of the main menu music from the original.
  4. Battletoads has a lot of mini-games, luckily each one appears only once.
  5. The game is very cheap, and it is worth mentioning that the game was released by much larger companies. It only costs $19.99/£15.
    • Speaking of the price, you can buy even cheaper under the Xbox Game Pass since the game release (though it won't be forever).
  6. Cutscenes are fun to watch, and it feels like you're watching an actual cartoon by the couch. Ironically, they look better than The Powerpuff Girls reboot or Teen Titans Go!, despite they're only a cutscenes.
  7. Still the same good humor as in the original.
  8. The game has a great potential to be adapted as an animated series, especially for the artistic style or the atmosphere of modern cartoons.
  9. Artificial intelligence has been done correctly by Beat 'em up standards.
  10. The controls are good, easy to learn and more precise than on original.
  11. The characters you play with vary in skill. Zitz is the fastest with his attacks, Pimple hits the hardest with slower attacks, and Rash strikes a nice balance between the two.

Bad Qualities

  1. The platforming elements are not interesting and are limited only to collecting crystals and solving simple puzzles.
  2. In the reboot, it was decided to soften the Dark Queen design, and not in a good way, as her mouth is really poorly-done.
  3. In beat 'em up elements it is difficult to hit the opponent or catch a fly due to illegibility in the background.
  4. The game doesn't have online co-op.
  5. Overall, the game is short and can be completed in four hours.

Reception

The game received mixed reviews, both from the critics and players alike. On OpenCritic, the game received a rating of "Fair", an average score of 72/100, and a 60% critics recommend, based on 75 reviews.[1] On Metacritic, an Xbox One version reveived a 74/100 based on 49 reviews, and the PC version received a 72/100 based on 16 reviews. However, the game was less well received by users, because it has a 6.4/10 for the Xbox One version, and a 5.1/10 for the PC version.[2][3]

Terence Wiggins, a new IGN employee (the same reviewer behind Waking), gave an 8/10, saying that the game lacked the difficult platforming for which the original was known, though the game itself remained difficult.[4]

Chris Carter from Destructoid gave a 7/10, describing: "Solid and definitely has an audience. There could be some hard-to-ignore faults, but the experience is fun."[5]
