Plot
Taking place in 1911, the game tells the story of John Marston, a former outlaw who is taken from his family and forced by the Bureau of Investigation to bring the remaining members of his old gang to justice.
Why It Rocks
- Large open-world map that takes place between Mexico and United States with tons of memorable locations.
- John Marston is an amazing, compelling and iconic protagonist.
- Amazing old western soundtrack composed by Bill Elm & Woody Jackson.
- Large variety of weapons and equipment.
- The "Honor" is a morality system that affects how NPCs interact to the player.
- It awards something if you reach the highest or the lowest honor.
- If you reach the highest honor, a nun appears and gives you the Obscuridad del Santo Andres, which is a item that decreases 25% of gunshot damage from your enemies.
- If you reach the lowest honor, if you whistle, a unique horse breed called "Dark Horse" appears, which has a dark skin, has high health and stamina, but slower than War Horse and the rare ones.
- The honor affects your presence in the world.
- Honorable people will react you positively if you have high honor, but they will react you negatively if you have low honor.
- Dishonorable people will react you positively if you have low honor, but they will react you negatively if you have high honor.
- It will also receive discounts from the stores around the world.
- Reaching high honor, you will get discounts in all stores in the world (except Thieves' Landing).
- Reaching low honor, you will get discounts in Thieves' Landing.
- It awards something if you reach the highest or the lowest honor.
- Many animals that live in certain realistic locations.
- Great graphics and visuals for 2010 standards, this game was released in the same year as Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
- Plants can be used to craft rare items.
- The Dead-eye feature slows the time and you can mark the X targets on the enemies to do a fast kill-spree.
- This is the first Rockstar game that you can replay any mission.
- Unlike Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City that you can replay a mission, it is very limited, you can only replay a mission after you reach a checkpoint and die, leaving a message.
- A large Multiplayer mode that isn't insanely focused unlike its sequel counterpart.
- Lots of things to do.
- Many odd-jobs and stranger missions that flesh out the world.
- Unlike Grand Theft Auto IV that was the first Rockstar game to feature random events, it improved further in this game.
- Excellent voice acting.
- Gritty and very well written story about the dying wild west going into modern times, revenge and like the title says "Redemption".
- John Marston's death at the end of the game was incredibly shocking, tragic, and heartbreaking, this ending is considered one of the most profound and brilliant conclusions to a video game.
- The Undead Nightmare DLC is considered one of the best DLCs of all time, featuring an entirely new non-canonical single-player campaign that follows John as he tries to find a cure for the highly infectious undead plague that has spread across the frontier. Including new enemy types such as zombies, sasquatches and four supernatural mounts to ride called the Four Horses of the Apocalypse.
- After completing 100% of the game, you will be awarded a achievement/trophy and the Bureau outfit.
- The latter gives the player amnesty in Mexico, meaning the law won't touch you.
Bad Qualities
- You can't retry a failed stranger mission, forcing you to start a new game or reload a previous save.
- Nigel West Dickens's missions are difficult and tedious, especially The Sport of Kings, and Liars. one of the worst missions in the game.
- You can't swim in this game unlike in GTA SA and GTA IV, if you end up in the water over your eyes, you will drown on contact.
- The "DEAD" game over screen sound is slightly creepy.
- The game over screen comes quickly if you drown (rarely, the game waits the game over screen until you see John/Jack Marston drowned underwater), after that, game over sound plays after appearing the "DEAD" screen, which is very disturbing.
- In the Undead Nightmare DLC, the "DEAD" game over screen is replaced with "UNDEAD" to showcase the zombie theme of the game, but the game over sound that comes after you die is way more creepier and nightmare inducing.
- It makes sense when John Marston get bitten to death by zombies and turns into a undead as the game over screen, but it doesn't makes sense when he turns into a undead after drowning, falling high from a mountain, get blown up, get flamed to death or even dying as a undead.
- Cougars and Bears are very scary, they will maul you from behind, if you get mauled two times, you are dead.
- Five Finger Fillet is considered a very hard minigame.
- The game had too many bugs and glitches since it's launch, due to messed up code.
- There are also some framerate drops.
- The manimals is considered one of the most notorious glitches of all time in videogames.
- The most infamous manimal is The Donkey Lady, she later appeared as a easter egg in Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Still not released to PC. Fan project Red Dead Redemption: Damned Enhancement Project was cancelled due to Take-Two filing a lawsuit on Johnathan Wyckof.
Reception
Red Dead Redemption is regarded as one of the best games ever made. On GameFAQs, the 360 version of the game has a 4.40 rating and the PlayStation 3 version has a rating 4.41.
The Undead Nightmare DLC expansion became a stand alone game, with its own physical copy. In 2011, a Game of the Year Edition was released.
