Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese video game developer, publisher, and distribution company that is best known for its Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts role-playing video game franchises, among numerous others. Several of them have sold over 10 million copies worldwide, with the Final Fantasy franchise alone selling over 115 million. The Square Enix headquarters are in the Shinjuku Eastside Square Building in Shinjuku, Tokyo. The company employs over 3800 employees worldwide. They also acquired Taito in 2005.

Why They Rock

  1. Lots of great and widely known role-playing franchises such as Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts.
  2. They kept the Taito branding distinct from Square Enix. As a result, not all Taito developed games were published by Square Enix.
  3. The most notable thing about the company is its innovative technology development.
  4. When Yosuke Matsuda became a ceo for Square Enix approval processes for games became more quicker and even if it didn't came through it still would at some point.
  5. Behind some franchises such as Hitman, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Just Cause.
  6. Makers of the Play Arts Kai figurines.
  7. High quality cinematics one of the most memorable is Aerith's death in Final Fantasy 7 and the spontaneous combustion scene in Parasite Eve.
  8. They saved Eidos from shutting their doors.
  9. Always make realistic and beautiful graphics.
  10. They care about their IPs a lot.
  11. When they remaster games, they usually add extra content to the remasters.
  12. They support all consoles, even if they're dying or not selling well, like the PlayStation Vita.
  13. Before they merged, they made some of the foundations of Japanese role-playing games, as Enix created Dragon Quest. This game also made RPG games more found in Japan itself.
  14. They opened a brand new studio dedicated exclusively to creating retro RPG’s.
  15. They are very interested in feedback for their games and for the companies future as well. They even asked fans what one game they would want Square Enix to make.
  16. They take their time for creating games such as delaying Dragon Quest XI on the switch due to it having a outdated game engine.
  17. They consider lootboxes to be very bad for business. And they defended single player games as well from the claims of Electronic Arts.
  18. They gave out $10,000 in scholar ship funds as part of promoting Life Is Strange.
  19. Many of their games have memorable soundtracks.
  20. Incredible art design especially from Tetsuya Nomura.
  21. The Square Enix initiative is a program where they give feedback and resources and also complete creative freedom to indie developers and they ask the fanbase if this is something they would like to support.
  22. They deeply appreciate fan support from memes to cosplay and when Shinji Hashimoto found about the photoshopped Noctis and his friends meme he found it humorous and even encouraged fans to create more of it to help promote the game.
  23. They have an interest in nurturing the talent of younger developers within their company as well. Especially when how few of the original core members are no longer with Square Enix.
  24. They make really high quality merchandise one such for example is a Batman statue designed by Tetsuya Nomura. It originally came from a cancelled game project.
  25. They are also highly involved in anime production and manga publishing through Gangan Comics and many series like Black Butler or FullMetal Alchemist was published. Now they are also expanding more publishing into the west to help support the manga scene in the west.
  26. They also run square enix stores and cafes as well physically in Japan.
  27. They have been focusing on region specific games to help appeal to different players.
  28. They are also highly interested in collaborating with other developers.
  29. Even when games are released in the west they still keep things true to its Japanese roots instead of catering towards westernization.

Bad Qualities

  1. They published MindJack and The Quiet Man, which are awful.
  2. They've had histories of financial issues and part of it was due to anti consumer practices.
  3. They work on multiple projects all at once which often leads to resources being stretched thin. The reason why Kingdom Hearts has such a convoluted story was due to Tetsuya Nomura having to work on multiple projects especially Final Fantasy related.
  4. Recently they've been making games exclusive to consoles and labeling it as exclusive to said console, but then re-releases the exclusive games to other platforms such as the PC and adding extra features to that version. The Last Remnant for example was originally for the xbox 360 but now its remastered to the Switch.
  5. They were using SNK playmore assets without SNK'S approval and this led to a nasty lawsuit against them.
  6. Though not as bad as EA, Ubisoft and Warner Bros, some of their PC ports are bad, especially Just Cause 3 & 4.
  7. Like Nintendo, they can be overprotective of their IPs, albeit in a lesser extent.
  8. Squaresoft refused to make games for Sega's consoles for no reason at all.
  9. They are ignoring the Gex IP since that he used to be owned by Crystal Dynamics, then Eidos and now them, he is the only IP that they don’t care about.
  10. They like to milk popular games and franchises such as Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV.
  11. They were charging money for the endings of Final Fantasy XIII-2.
  12. They decided to stop making non mainstream games. But however they still do occasionally make them such as one remaster of the world ends with you. In fact this extreme focus on triple a games only has led them to losing a net loss of 33 million dollars.
  13. One employee who was working on Kingdom Hearts was sexually harassed by a female employee and he ended up getting fired.
  14. Mismanagement and communication errors is a common problem behind the scenes and the cause of why many of the games they make often take long times. The reason why Kingdom Hearts 3 took so long was due to Square Enix wanting to have Tetsuya Nomura work on many different projects and the spin offs were put in place to satiate fan desire for new games.
  15. Occasionally they announce games too early and even Tetsuya Nomura admitted that it was a mistake as FF7 remake and Kingdom Hearts 3 was still being made in the early stages.
  16. Square-Enix pulled 3 mobile games from Belgium after the country banned loot boxes.
  17. Before Enix merged with Square. In the 80's they made disturbing eroge games that had content such as lolicon and guro. Thankfully they stopped making them even at that period and started making games and series that are famous today such as Dragon Quest and Star Ocean.
  18. They accidentally delisted FF9 on steam.
  19. Because of the rough launch for Left Alive they disabled streaming for the game.
  20. They have a tendencies of spending millions of dollars on advertising instead of their core development.
  21. They were incredibly salty over the sales of Tomb Raider despite selling well they had a tantrum over it not being as popular in sales as of Call Of Duty.
  22. Nomura is incompetent and doesn't know how to write or direct games. He also pointlessly adds belts and zippers to everyone's design.

  • They had to cancel a event due to a death threat from a disgruntled fan threatening to repeat the Kyoto animation fire.
